Cordura and DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products launch “eco-efficient textiles”

The ongoing Techtextil exhibition in Frankfurt (May 9-12) was the setting for the presentation of the first “eco-innovations” to result from a collaboration between functional fabric developer Cordura and DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products.

The two companies announced in March that they would work together to develop sustainable textile solutions for performance fabrics.

In Frankfurt, they unveiled the first composite textiles made using DuPont Tate and Lyle’s Susterra propanediol-based membranes, which were created by Taiwanese textile company Tiong Liong, the first mill authorised for footwear and gear as part of the project. The textiles incorporate Cordura’s EcoMade fabric, made with recycled polyester yarns, and Tiong Liong’s Ariaprene foam, which uses a Bluesign approved water-based lamination process designed to avoid skin irritation. It also doesn’t give off harmful pollutants throughout the product lifecycle.

The partners also presented the results of their work with another Taiwan-based manufacturer, Everest Textile, the first fabric mill involved in the project. It was able to incorporate Susterra membranes into a range of fabrics. At Techtextil, the focus was on Cordura Naturalle fabrics that incorporated a polyurethane bio-based membrane containing more than 25% of materials from a renewable source.

“Eco-innovations in the industry can take the shape in many forms from renewably sourced products, to long-lasting durability to recycled materials,” explained Laurie Kronenberg, global marketing director for DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products. “This is exactly what we had in mind as we engaged our first apparel, footwear and gear fabric mill collaboration partners, Tiong Liong and Everest. We worked with eco-efficiency in mind to develop solutions for those brands demanding bio-based, sustainable, performance materials across a variety of markets.”
