Nike adds bag and shin guard to 3D-printed portfolio
Nike has launched its first 3D printed bag and a new shin guard, with football players Wayne Rooney, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo the first to test the equipment during the football World Cup in Brazil.

The Rebento duffle bag is made from a leather upper and a 3D printed base. "We wanted to create something that was truly special for the game’s greatest players,” said Martin Lotti, creative director for Nike Football.

The laser-sintered nylon creates an intertwined weave on the bag’s 3D printed base, a lightweight, structure that allows for flex.

For the shin guard, a shock system at the back of the guard combines with an outer shell for impact protection with increased flexibility and breathability, which Nike says provides more consistent impact absorption than foam.

“We found that the more material you took away, the better the guard protected the shin,” said Mr Lotti. “Reducing material also allowed for unprecedented flexibility, creating a fit that was unlike anything players had experienced.

“With 3D printing, we were able to quickly innovate, experiment and test hundreds of patterns and prototypes,” he added.
