Euratex president says labels of origin are about informing consumers

Outgoing president of the European Textile and Clothing Industry Association (Euratex), Alberto Paccanelli, has said the organisation supports initiatives in Brussels to introduce compulsory labels of origin on products coming into the European Union.

In recent comments to media in Spain, Mr Paccanelli said: “Euratex has always thought it a good thing for products to have a label of origin, especially products that come from outside the European Union. There is no other area in the world that does not have ‘Made In’ labelling norms for products coming in from outside.”

He said he does not view this as protectionist, merely as a means of providing consumers with information.

For him, the key to survival for Europe’s textile industry is to keep adding value and he drew a distinction between technical textile in production, which he said is a sector that can support high rates of pay for workers because it adds a high level of value, and textile companies that try only compete on price.
