The world will run out of land for cotton, H&M warns

Sustainable fashion is the future of fashion, according to Swedish retail group H&M. Speaking on a recent BBC radio programme, the group’s sustainability manager, Catarina Midby, said: “We can’t see a future in our industry without working sustainably.”

Ms Midby went on to higlight what her company perceives as a “really important” need to use waste as a resource, including recycling old garments to make new ones. “For instance, with cotton,” she said, “with a growing population and growing markets, there will not be enough land area in the end to grow the cotton, so we have to come up with different solutions.”

H&M has joined the list of clothing retailers that have begun collection used garments (“from any brand, in any condition”) in its stores for recycling.
