Sports group adidas is to remove plastic bags from its global retail stores in line with its sustainability strategy for 2020. The company plans to make the switch to paper bags immediately, but stores in Russia and Kazakhstan will not make the change until June 2016.

Adidas believes that this initiative will eliminate around 70 million plastic shopping bags from 14,000 retail stores worldwide. Approximately three million of these will be in the US with a further two million in Germany.

"Phasing out shopping plastic bags is part of our wider effort to constantly increase the use of more sustainable materials in our production, products and stores, as we recently announced with our newly launched 2020 Sustainability Strategy,” said Roland Auschel, adidas board member, responsible for global sales.
