Global cotton production expected to rise

07/10/2016
The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) says world production of cotton is expected to increase 7% to 22.6 million tonnes in 2016/2017.

The rise comes despite its predictions that cotton producing area will fall 1% to 30 million hectares, the smallest area since 2009/10. Average yield is projected to improve by 9% to 753 kg/hectare.

China’s cotton production is projected to drop 4% to 4.6 million tonnes, but this will be offset by stable production in India (5.8 million tonnes) and increase in Brazil (+7% to 1.4 million tonnes) and the US (+25% to 3.5 million tonnes).

The ICAC expects global consumption to remain at 23.8 million tonnes in 2016/2017, which will reduce world stocks by 7%.
