Euratex calls for “smart and smooth” Brexit
26/06/2017
The organisation said it was in the “common interest” of the UK and the remaining 27 EU countries (EU27) that a “smart and smooth” Brexit be achieved. This would ensure that current supply chains continue to function effectively.
Euratex warned that “an uncontrolled separation”, commonly referred as a ‘hard Brexit’, would have a “very serious impact on the industries of both sides” due to the higher import tariffs that could apply in the textile and clothing sector.
It also called for those negotiating the deal to avoid any legal uncertainty by securing an early arrangement on the legal relationship between the two parties in the medium term. Any transitional arrangement should cover suspension of customs duties, it added, and this deal should lead directly to a comprehensive trade and investment agreement in the long term.
