Committee wants more focus on clothing in proposals on plastic

The Environment (ENVI) Committee of the European Parliament has published a draft report in response to proposals that the parliament published earlier this year for reducing the impact of plastic on the environment.

In its suggested amendments, ENVI puts more focus than the original proposals on synthetic clothing as one of the main areas of concern. It says apparel made from synthetic fibres, along with tyres, contribute 63% of the microplastics that end up in the aquatic environment.

“It is important to specify that the European Union should have a comprehensive approach to this problem,” ENVI says, “given the impacts of plastic marine debris on the environment, marine fauna and human health.”
