‘K-rPET’ to trickle into South Korea
Local media have reported that South Korean fibre producer TK Chemical’s K-rPET (rPET meaning recycled polyethylene terephthalate and the letter K standing for Korea) initiative is due to make its market debut in the form of “eco-friendly” clothing and accessories during spring-summer 2021.
The project has been pursued in partnership with Korean mineral water company Sparkle, outdoor brand BlackYak and the Korea Circular Resource Distribution Support Center. It marks a first for domestic South Korean recycling enterprises, which have previously had to import waste PET bottles to make rPET yarns.
While the collaboration will “mainly” produce t-shirts, shoes and backpacks will also be released, among other products, TK Chemical said. There are plans to expand the range across adult categories, while also branching out into childrenswear and household goods.
