‘Boom’ times for South Korean outdoor industry

The South Korean outdoor apparel and accessories industry is currently enjoying a “boom”, local media have reported.

Sales across the country’s top eight outdoors brands (Discovery Expedition, North Face, K2, Nepa, BlackYak, Eider, Kolon Sport and Columbia) reportedly more than doubled during the first week of March, growing by around 117% on average.

Warmer springtime weather, the roll out of covid-19 vaccinations and so-called “revenge spending” have all been listed as contributing factors by industry analysts.

Lighter clothing such as windbreaker jackets and sweatshirts, plus hiking boots and trekking shoes, have all been popular among shoppers.

Discovery Expedition, the most successful outdoors brand in the country by sales, saw its revenues increase by 90.7% on the previous year. The North Face, which currently places second in terms of popularity, saw the highest boost to its sales, which were up 156.6% year on year.
