Keel Labs, formerly AlgiKnit, announces Kelsun yarn
The biomaterials developer formerly known as AlgiKnit has rebranded under the name Keel Labs, an announcement it made while also revealing the brand name for its still-under-development debut yarn, Kelsun, which is based on alginate polymers from kelp.

A keel refers to a ship’s structural spine, engineered to simultaneously establish balance and enable forward momentum through ocean waves. The new brand name thus signals the organisation’s relationship to the sea and its resources.

“Keel Labs encompasses our vision of ever-expanding horizons,” commented co-founder and chief executive Tessa Callaghan. “Our work begins with fibre, but our responsibility does not end there. We are building a future in which sustainable materials harness the power of the ocean to span industries and applications.”

The US-based company, founded in 2017, raised $13 million in series A funding over the summer, around the same time it opened a new manufacturing facility in North Carolina’s Research Triangle.
