Big names to sit on steering committee for Pakistan Accord
Apparel retail groups Bestseller, H&M, PVH Corp, Inditex, Otto Group and C&A have agreed to play a lead role in a new commitment to workplace safety for textile factory employees in Pakistan.
These European companies will form the steering committee for the International Accord for Health and Safety in the Textile and Garment Industry. In all, 190 global brands and retailers and two global union federations have signed the accord.
Together, signatory brands source garments and textiles worth $2.6 billion a year from Pakistan.
As a next step, the steering committee will step up their engagement with stakeholders in Pakistan, set up Accord offices in the Asian country and begin a programme of action in garment factories there.
The Accord was set up in 2021 as the successor to the 2013 Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh. The new agreement continues signatories’ commitment to supporting workplace safety programmes in Bangladesh and to establishing programmes in other countries too.
