In a statement, GOTS explained that it had been made aware that the Maharashtra-based organisation has until June 7 to take corrective actions, adding that it was “committed to protecting the integrity” of the GOTS label. It also said that Control Union India had informed partners that it was working to meet IOAS requirements by mid-March and that it therefore hoped to subsequently obtain “a priority review from IOAS to lift the suspension”.
GOTS additionally published Version 7.0 of its standard on March 13, due to become effective March 1, 2024. Key revisions to the criteria include permission to incorporate recycled organic fibres and a reduction in the quantity of recycled synthetic fibres that can be used to make approved textiles.
“The new revision process was the most inclusive in GOTS history, with over 600 inputs received during two public consultation periods,” commented managing co-director, Rahul Bhajekar. “GOTS Version 7.0 offers solutions for creating truly responsible supply chains, setting a benchmark for the textile industry.”
