Green light for Carbios PET recycling plant
Biorecycling company Carbios has received the necessary permission to go ahead with the construction of a plant at which it will break down used plastic and textile polymers to make new polyester (PET) fibres.
Carbios’ technology is an enzymatic recycling solution for PET waste. It has said this plant, which will be located in Longlaville in the east of France, will be the world’s first PET biorecycling plant. It will be beside an existing production facility that its partner for the project, Indorama Ventures, already has in place there.
Construction of the new factory will begin right away and it is scheduled to come into operation in 2025.
The plant will have a processing capacity of 50,000 tonnes of post-consumer PET waste per year. It will be waste that is mostly non-recyclable mechanically. It will be the equivalent of 2 billion coloured PET bottles or 2.5 billion food trays.
In total, the project will generate 150 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
