Inventor of ‘ingenious solutions’ for outdoor enthusiasts dies

The team at outdoor fabric developer Pertex has expressed its sadness at learning of the death of mountaineer Hamish Hamilton, inventor of the original product.

Mr Hamilton, who invented other outdoor products too, including the Vango Force 10 tent and Buffalo clothing and sleeping bags, died on March 18. 

His idea for a lightweight, breathable, woven fabric for outdoor clothing and equipment to Perseverance Mills in Sheffield in 1979 and the Pertex brand developed from there.

On learning of his death, the brand, now owned by Japanese group Mitsui, said Hamish Hamilton had been a true pioneer. It added: “His genuine curiosity and passion for adventure lead him to the discovery of ingenious solutions for outdoor enthusiasts.”
