Supply agreement for Carbios polyester recycling plant
Biorecycling company Carbios has signed a new memorandum of understanding for the supply of post-consumer polyester waste from German waste materials management company Hündgen Entsorgungs.
Under the new agreement, Hündgen Entsorgungs will supply Carbios with 15,000 tonnes of polyester per year.
From the end of 2026 onwards, Carbios will transform this material into flakes for biorecycling. It will carry out this work at its first commercial-scale plant, which is currently under construction at Longlaville in France, using enzymatic depolymerisation technology.
The material will then be suitable for the production of food-grade purified terephthalic acid and monoethylene glycol that can then be re-polymerised into polyester fibres for clothing.
When it is fully operational, Carbios’s Longlaville plant will have an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes of polyester per year. Its enzymatic depolymerisation technology can process all kinds of polyester, including materials that cannot currently be recycled.
