US: sorting for circularity is a $1.5 billion opportunity
Innovation platform Fashion For Good has launched a project focusing on the potential for textile recycling in the US.
It has found that only 15% of the textile waste generated in the US at the moment is recovered, with 85% ending up in landfill or going for incineration.
A new report that Fashion For Good published on launching the project found that the US has “a $1.5 billion opportunity for fibre-to-fibre recycling by redirecting non-rewearable textiles from landfills and incinerators to recycling streams”.
It said collaboration among stakeholders, including brands, government, retailers, consumers, collectors, sorters, recyclers, and financial institutions, will be crucial if the textile industry is to make the most of this opportunity.
