Paris Olympics a springboard for FENC’s recycled fabrics

Performance fabrics manufacturer Far Eastern New Century (FENC) has said the 2024 Paris Olympics' aim of halving the Games' carbon footprint compared with previous editions has boosted business.

Johnny Hsi, vice-chairman of the Taiwanese company, said the Games' carbon goals mean many athletes are using sportswear made from more environmentally friendly fabrics.

FENC is a supplier to Adidas and Nike, and Hsi said that the kits of "many national teams" used the company's textiles.

Business opportunities are not limited to the games, but are anticipated to extend afterwards, when 'eco-friendly' fabrics might be brought into mainstream fashion, Hsi said.

Separately, FENCs polyester business has passed the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its greenhouse gas emissions reduction pathway. Targets have been set in line with the Paris Agreement 1.5°C trajectory to mitigate the effects of climate change and cap global temperature.

The group has committed to achieving net zero by 2050, with strategies including an improvement in
energy efficiency, adopting low-emission fuel alternatives, developing renewable energy and fostering raw materials transitions.
