Softener offers durability and good hand-feel, Archroma claims

Textile chemicals developer Archroma has announced a durable silicone softener for fabrics made from cellulosic yarns, including cotton. The company said the product, Siligen D2W LIQ C, would also work with cotton-Lycra blended knits.

It said use of the product would keep fabric soft and elastic for longer, helping to provide “long-lasting comfort and breathability” for wearers.

“To achieve the soft hand-feel that consumers expect, manufacturers commonly have to add a silicone softener during fabric finishing,” Archroma explained. “In the past, it was necessary to choose between a durable softener that negatively impacted the natural absorbency of the cotton fibre or a softener that preserved the fibre’s ability to hold moisture but also soon washed off through home laundering.”

The company’s vice-president for marketing and strategy, Dhirendra Gautam, insisted Siligen D2W LIQ C could enhance both durability and cotton hand-feel. He argued that this would help reduce the frequency with which consumers need to replace garments, which would, in turn, “conserve resources, minimise waste and lessen the environmental impact of the industry”.
