Uncertain future for Piñatex

03/11/2025

Reports from Spain suggest that Ananas Anam, the company that produces Piñatex, is seeking bankruptcy protection for its operation there.

Industry publication Modaes said at the end of October that sources at Ananas Anam España SL had confirmed the company was preparing to submit a request for legal protection from its creditors.

We have asked the company if it will still make the pineapple-based materials at its operation in the Philippines but, as yet, have received no clarification on the matter.

Ananas Anam’s main office was in London but official records show that the UK-based company formally closed down in March 2023.

Those records also make reference to a registered Ananas Anam company in Ireland. According to entries at Ireland’s official companies registration office, this company was dissolved in March 2022.

A number of senior people have left the business in recent months. Head of research and sustainability, Dr Raquel Prado, and head of communications and business development, Riikka Juva, both left Ananas Anam to take up roles at food distribution group Del Monte in August. The managing director of Ananas Anam España, Josep Taylor, left his role in October.
