OceanSafe achieves new milestone and partners with Lenzing
Swiss textile innovator OceanSafe, the maker of a cradle-to-cradle certified Gold biodegradable polyester, has teamed up with Lenzing to develop fabrics combining wood-based Tencel lyocell with OceanSafe’s naNea co-polyester.

A capsule collection was created to highlight the potential of this blend, presented at Performance Days last week. A number of partners made the selection possible, as outlined by Nicole Schram, Lenzing’s global head of technical business development: “We had Tearfil working their magic with yarn development, Impetus bringing their know-how for amazing knits and seamless fabrics, Kingwhale perfecting the fleece that feels so good against your skin and G-LOFT premium Insulation contributing with their filling technology for jackets”.

Meanwhile, OceanSafe is embarking on a new stage of its development, as Matthias Fuchs, marketing director, told Sportstextiles. “Thanks to new supply chain partners, we are now producing at scale, and we can offer naNea at market competitive prices,” he said. “This changes the whole narrative.”

OceanSafe offers three different configurations for its next-gen polyester:
1. Partially biobased, with around 30% biobased content
2. Partially textile-to-textile recycled (up to 70%)
3. Virgin

“It is up to the brand to choose what is best, all three offer the same performance characteristics, it is just a matter of priorities, price and MOQs,” said Mr Fuchs.
