Zerotec’s waste-reducing nesting solution
At Texworld last week, British start-up Zerotec presented its patented AI-powered zero-waste nesting platform. Launched last year by British designer Nicholas Betts, the programme is designed to assist brands in this critical phase of manufacturing. It provides data on fabric usage as well as information on cost simulation and carbon, water and energy savings due to the reduction of offcut waste, all in nearly one go. The easy-to-use programme has a simple interface and is accessible via any web browser, the founder told Sportstextiles.
Zerotec uses machine learning to suggest different nesting scenarios, delivering data to help the user decide which solution is best. The system differs from other nesting solutions in that it allows a user to indicate which design elements are non-negotiable and which ones, such as a hem, could be minimally altered without affecting the style. The system can be used to make selvedge jeans, and is particularly useful for leather goods, he said.
Mr Betts built the industry 4.0 solution by drawing on a system he had developed for his own zero waste label, Zero London. He adapted his experience to make it scalable. To avoid a possible homogenisation of styles, he has introduced processes that allow for differentiation. “We are applying artificial intelligence to do good by offering a simple sustainability tool for the apparel industry,” he said.
In addition to Zerotec, Mr Betts also heads Fashion 4.0, a fashion tech incubator for UK start-ups.
