Appeal for help
05/12/2008
Portugal’s Textile and Apparel Industry Federation (FITVEP) has asked the country’s government to put in place “a special programme of support”, similar to one it has already drawn up for the automotive industry, pointing out that 150,000 jobs depend on the textile sector.
The industry organisation sent a letter on December 4 to the prime minister, José Sócrates de Carvalho, and to the ministers in charge of finance and the economy, and innovation, saying it approved of a plan to support the automotive industry, but that the government needed to take similar steps to help textiles.
Portugal’s textile and apparel exports in 2006 were worth €4.1 billion, and had a total turnover of €6.2 billion.
