Nanotechnology in textiles to boom
17/12/2008
Scottish nanotechnology portal Nanoposts has issued details of a new report into the impact the technology is making on the textile industry.
The new report—Nanotechnology and Textiles: Market and Applications to 2015—puts the value of the global market for nanotechnology in the textiles industry at around $480 million in 2007. It points out that a number of nano-based products have already been introduced to the sector including applications for stain-, water- and fire-resistant fabrics.
However, Nanoposts forecasts that nano-based products and processes will be worth $4.9 billion to the textiles industry by 2015. Nanoposts expects that 24.6% of all textiles products available in 2015 will incorporate some form of nanotechnology.
It goes on to say that nanotechnology-based applications such self-cleaning textiles will start to make a major impact from 2011, and that there will probably be a significant revenue growth in nanotechnology products in the sector from 2011 onwards.
