Power problems lead to lay-offs

The newly elected chairman of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has urged the government to use all power generating capacity available in the country, and to suspend duties on furnace oil to make electricity cheaper

Tariq Mehmood said the entire textile chain was currently in deep trouble because manufacturers have access to only six or eight hours of electricity at the moment. Gas supplies to textile manufacturers have also been suspended in some parts of the country.

He said, textile mills have been forced to cut one shift and lay off one-third of staff, putting thousands of people out of work.
