Lacoste family feud grows as daughter named new president

Sports apparel company Lacoste has named Sophie Lacoste-Dournel as its new president – to the displeasure her father, who formerly held the role – after a meeting of its board on Monday.

The 36-year-old replaces Michel Lacoste in what is thought to have been an acrimonious process.

Michel is the son of the company’s founder, former tennis champion Rene Lacoste, who died in 1996. Michel announced last June that he would step down as president and said his niece, Beryl Hamilton Lacoste, should take the role.

However, the board deemed his daughter, Ms Lacoste-Dournel, as the rightful successor and shareholders were informed of the decision.

French press have reported that the family feud is growing. The former president said he was "saddened by the weakness and incompetence of the family shareholders who have been seduced by illusions”. Ms Lacoste-Dournel has been a member of the board of directors since 2005.
