Lululemon recalls 17% of women's pants

Canadian yogawear company Lululemon has warned retailers that a significant proportion of women’s pants and crops have fallen below standard and have been recalled.

It puts the figure at around 17% of “all women's bottoms in stores” and will result in a shortage of product in the near term.

The items affected are certain styles in the company’s signature black Luon fabric. “The ingredients, weight and longevity qualities of the pants remain the same but the coverage does not,” said the company in a statement, “resulting in a level of sheerness in some of our women's black Luon bottoms that falls short of our very high standards.”

The company has taken the affected pants off shelves, out of showrooms and off e-commerce sites and is working with its suppliers and manufacturers to replace the items as quickly as possible.

It did not name the fabric supplier, which it has been working with since 2004, but stressed it was not the result of changing manufacturers or quality of ingredients.

Lululemon CEO Christine Day said: "We regret any inconvenience this has caused. It is always our first priority to protect the quality of our fabrics that keep our guests [customers] so loyal to our products. We will accept nothing less than the very highest quality we are known for."

The company expects the issue will have a significant impact on its financial results. Up to March 17, 2013, it was expecting a comparable-store sales percentage increase of 11% and revenue in the range of $350 million to $355 million for the first quarter of 2013. It now expects a sales increase in the range of 5% to 8% and revenue between $333 million and $343 million.
