Syrian unrest hits organic cotton supplies

Organic cotton production fell by 8% in 2012 as unrest in Syria halted supplies from the second largest producer and drought in the US affected crops.

However, a report from the Textile Exchange shows that production in some countries, such as Tanzania and Nicaragua, expanded significantly.

After four years of rapid growth in organic from 2006 to 2010, 2011 witnessed a decline of 37%. "After last year’s significant drop, this year’s relative parity is not as daunting,” said LaRhea Pepper, managing director of Textile Exchange.

“We have seen some progress made in terms of seed security for farmers and clearer market signals as well as commitments from brands and retailers.”

She described the need for a steady supply of quality non-GMO seed. “We are seeking funders who can help us invest in this crucial step for the future of organic cotton. Investment in cotton seed is critical,” she said.

The exchange surveyed 30 organic cotton producer groups, representing 132,000 farmers in 16 countries.
