ZDHC group updates roadmap goals

The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Group has published a second version of its
Joint Roadmap, which updates the aims and sets out new strategies following consultation with suppliers, textile associations, government agencies and academics.

While the first draft – launched in 2011 in response to a Greenpeace report – focused on a list of dangerous or prohibited substances, the new document has broadened the aims, to look at the wider environmental and social effects caused by the global apparel and footwear industry.

The group – which includes adidas, Jack Wolfskin, Li Ning, New Balance, Nike and Puma – presents its long-term vision, 2015 and 2020 goals and activities it expects will “catalyse industry change”.

“To achieve the goal of systemic change and commercialisation of new, preferred alternative chemistries, we will need to transform the industry’s manufacturing inputs and processes. This requires full collaboration among thousands of organisations,” said Jessica Wollmuth, ZDHC programme manager. “Good progress has been achieved thus far, and the Joint Roadmap, Version 2, lays a firm foundation for creating an apparel and footwear industry that delivers high quality products using safe chemistries.”

Achievements in the past year include: the completion of chemical use and management surveys, and wastewater testing at 20 facilities in Bangladesh, China, India, Taiwan and Vietnam; drawing up a chemical inventory that it says is the most complete, publicly available compilation in the textile industry; delivering training to suppliers; and the agreement to phase out C8 chemistry by no later than January 1, 2015.
