Bangladesh factory owners agree (reluctantly) to wage rise

Reports from Bangladesh say garment manufacturers in the country have reached a collective agreement to pay their workers a minimum of 5,300 taka (currently just under $70) per month from December. The announcement came after a meeting between factory owners and the country’s prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on November 13.

A minimum wage level of around $70 per month represents an increase of 75% on the existing minimum and is the level a government minimum wage panel has recommended. Sheikh Hasina is reported to have ordered the garment manufacturers to accept the change. She urged an increase earlier this year.

Garment factory owners have complained that their customers, which include many prominent US and European clothing brands and retailers, are unlikely to consent to any price increases for finished product.
