Patagonia’s plant-based wetsuit gets global launch

06/12/2013
The first wetsuit made from a plant-based rubber rather than neoprene is now on sale globally after an initial launch in Japan.

US-based outdoor brand Patagonia joined forces with Yulex, an agricultural-based biomaterials company, to develop the suit.

Made from 60% guayule, the suit matches a traditional Patagonia wetsuit in technical performance yet is significantly more environmentally-friendly than a traditional wetsuit.

“Together with Patagonia, we hope that the wider use of guayule will decrease the production of the traditional fossil fuel based neoprene wetsuit,” said Jeffrey Martin, co-founder and CEO of Yulex Corporation.

Guayule is a sustainable, industrial crop that does not compete with food or fibre crops and requires very low inputs.

An in-depth look at the suit, including interviews with Patagonia's surf director Jason McCaffrey, features in the latest edition of WSA magazine.
