ZDHC outlines chemical disclosure method
The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Group (ZDHC Group) has published the results of research into chemical disclosure methodologies among manufacturers, which it describes as a “critical step” towards identifying a platform that will improve chemicals management in the apparel and footwear supply chains.

It has selected Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs) as its preferred tool, saying they are most widely used, and the moved has been commended by the UN Environment Programme.
"The principle of disclosure and transparency underpins our work," said Cheryl Kreindler, ZDHC programme manager.

“After researching disclosure methodologies, the ZDHC Group recognizes PRTR as one of the best methods for addressing the specific issues posed by ZDHC and advocated by the Right-to-Know principle. However, we are also mindful of the timescales involved and the need to take interim action. This will be achieved by introducing a system to prevent intentional use of hazardous chemicals in the manufacturing process.”

The ZDHC group, which includes Adidas, Jack Wolfskin, Li Ning, New Balance, Nike and Puma, intends to release a manufacturer's Restricted Substance List and prioritisation framework in the coming months.

The chemical disclosure research can be accessed via its website.
