Rhodia claims world's first biodegradable yarn
Polyamide fibre manufacturer Rhodia has launched what it claims is the world's first biodegradable yarn, Amni Soul Eco, which is available on commercial release this month.
It presented the nylon 6.6 yarn during São Paulo Fashion Week, in collaboration with its owner Solvay group and designer Ronaldo Fraga, and said it disintegrates in landfills by 50% in just over a year.
Francisco Ferraroli, president of Solvay's fibres division, said: "This release is Rhodia's commitment to sustainability and the textile industry. Currently, polyamide fibres take decades to decompose. With this product, the decomposition time reduces to less than three years.
"This is a major breakthrough for the whole textile industry, thereby we contribute to the environment of the future generations."
Mr Fraga, a Brazilian designer known for using sustainable materials, said: "The Amni Soul Eco yarn is the beginning of a new era in sustainable materials for the 21st Century’s clothing.”
