It has now outlined measures it has taken towards that end.
The company said: “As the first European outdoor company to do so, Vaude has certified its environmental management in accordance with EMAS. The company headquarters and all products manufactured there have been climate neutral since 2012, and almost 80% of the VAUDE apparel collection already meets the strictest criteria in the industry.”
It has also stated that by 2017, it will have restricted the use of PVC and switched to more environmentally friendly, waterproof alternatives, despite additional costs of 30%.
Its CSR manager, Hilke Patzwall, is head of the Sustainability Working Group of the European Outdoor Group; board member Jan Lorch is CEO of the European Outdoor Conservation Association; and CEO Antje von Dewitz was appointed by the federal government as the only industry representative on the board of the German Federal Environmental Foundation.
It has also been named winner of the Axia Award 2014 for the region of Baden Württemberg.
"The participants in the Axia Award prove that a conscientious responsibility to employees, customers and the environment can be a worthwhile sustainability strategy that ensures long-term success," said Dr Hans-Rudolf Rohm, a partner at accountancy Deloitte, which organised the awards.
“We agree that Vaude is the most sustainable outdoor brand in Europe, even if the path before us is longer than the path behind us,” said Ms von Dewitz.
