The Speed project race starts at Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles and the competitors reach the finish line 344 miles later in Las Vegas. Each team consists of six runners.
Polartec and Oiselle aimed to make history when their team, Bird Strike, left the start line. It was made up of 6 racers and 6 support crew, all of whom were women.
The team turned to Polartec product managers Karen Beattie and Karen Whitter to find the best fabrics to wear during the race. Ms Beattie was responsible for the creation of Polartec’s innovative Delta cooling fabric, which the runners wore as part of Oiselle’s Flyout collection. Ms Whitter is responsible for Polartec’s breathable Alpha insulation.
“The fabric withstood the sweat and grit of this race,” explained Cathleen Knutson, part of team Bird Strike. “Even after two hot six mile runs it still felt soft. It was lightweight, yet durable and never felt clingy on my skin.”
The team crossed the Las Vegas finish line 44 hours, 27 minutes and 11 seconds after leaving Los Angeles, achieving a hard-earned milestone.
