03/11/2016
The panel, entitled “Reducing the Water Footprint of Cotton", brought together researchers and scientists to discuss the ways in which water usage in cotton production can be reduced.
The ICAC said 71% of total water withdrawals around the world are destined for agriculture. In Pakistan, where cotton is the predominant crop, this figure is 94%, making it an important issue in the country.
Among the speakers at the discussion was Arif Makhdum, director of the Sustainable Agriculture Programme operated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Pakistan. He presented an update on the progress of the programme, which is being implemented in seven regions of the country. This programme was resulted in a 25% reduction in the use of water in Pakistan’s cotton industry.
