According to the results of a survey released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently, the country’s efforts to encourage its population of roughly 1.4 billion people to participate in winter sports have been a success.

Specifically, over 346 million Chinese people have now engaged in winter sporting activities since Beijing was chosen to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in 2015, NBS said, soaring well past the government’s initial target of 300 million people.

Around 37.3% of winter sports participants surveyed (approximately 82 million individuals) were aged between 18 and 30 years old. Statistically, this was the largest age demographic.

According to NBS’ data, the vast majority of the 346 million people who said that they had engaged in these activities were from east China (143 million individuals), followed by residents of west China (84 million), central China (68 million) and, lastly, north-easterners (51 million).

Further, China’s total number of standard sized ice rinks has now risen to 654, representing a 317% boost since 2015. The number of ski resorts (indoor and outdoor) in the country has also increased from 568 in 2015 to 803 today.
