Major retailers join Altag Fibre Club
Fashion for Good’s Fibre Club concept is designed to accelerate uptake of more sustainable raw materials in the fashion industry. Last year, it launched such a programme with AltMat, a company based in India developing a natural cellulose fibre made from agro-industry waste. Today, it announced that retailers C&A and Zalando have joined the Altag Fiber Club as its first brand signatories.
The two companies have committed to producing styles featuring Altag fibre, bringing fashion made from upcycled agricultural residue into mainstream retail.
AltMat uses enzymes to break down cellulose-rich waste into a natural fibre, not a regenerated cellulose. “We can process many kinds of agri-residue. As of now we majorly use oilseed food crop’s stems,” CEO and founder Shikha Shah told Sportstextiles.
The company operates a 500 to 1,000-tonne per year factory in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
