Odour-free undergarment tested

A functional undergarment, designed by experts at Tokyo-based Japan Women’s University is to be tested by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency. The J-Ware undergarment, designed to be worn in space, is to be tested by the first Japanese astronaut to live on the International Space Station, Koichi Wakata.

It is designed to remain odour free, even after a period of seven days. The underwear is also said to be flame retardant and static free as well as absorbing water, killing bacteria, drying quickly and helping to insulate the body. If the trials are successful, astronauts will be able to cut down on the amount of underwear they take on missions. It has also been suggested that the technology could be used for other applications, for example for sports underwear and even everyday underwear.
