Systex project gathers momentum

30/03/2009

Systex is a new coordination effort between industry, academic and government institutions, researchers and users, which enables site visitors to pool and evaluate existing information, generate new interactions and foster commercialisation.

The framework of the database, which went online in February, was recently presented during a consortium meeting in Lille. More than 560 references to papers on intelligent textiles have already appeared on the database. It is said to be the attempt to bring together all the existing information in Europe related to the development and commercialisation of smart textiles.

European network clusters such as the European Technology Platform—which has around 600 active partners—and industry-driven policy initiative EPoSS have been contacted and will contribute to develop synergies. EPoSS is contributing to the Lisbon Strategy, aiming at boosting economic growth, creating more and better jobs and ensuring sustainable prosperity in Europe.

The user-friendly database will provide an inventory of ongoing EU projects in the smart textiles arena. It is divided into the following main areas: academic papers, projects, teaching material, conference proceedings, industry patents, demonstration material and publications.

Upcoming events at which Systex will be discussed include the European Technology Platform Conference, which will be held April 1-2 and the Advanced Textiles European-US Entrepreneur Networking Conference on April 2-3. Both events take place in Brussels.

The 12 Systex partners are: Ghent University, Department of Textiles; Smartex; CEA; UNIPI, University of Pisa;  CNR-INFM, National Institute of Physics of Matter – National Research Council; IMEC; Philips Research; Multitel; Institut Français Textile et Habillement; Anne Demoor; IHOFMANN; and Plastic Electronics Foundation.

The project will run from June 2008 to June 2011.
