Sri Lanka devises new water treatment

03/04/2009

Sri Lanka has been looking into ways of improving the way the textile and apparel sectors operate, right from the start of the manufacturing process to the very end. As part of this, it has concentrated on reducing pollution and exploring ways of making the industries “greener”.

The Atomic Energy Commission is, in cooperation with the Central Environmental Authority, researching better ways of treating water after it has been used in textile dyeing units, at which point it can contain deadly chemicals. A new method it has come up with is using an Electron Beam Facility, which treats the water using an e-beam. Not only does it help to remove colour and the oxidation of organic impurities, it also reduces the time taking during treatment.

Korea-based scientist Bumsoo Han is carrying out a study in Sri Lanka to assess whether the project will be effective and to raise awareness about the technology.

Dr Han has worked on various wastewater treatment projects in Daegu, Korea.
