Hebei: 1000 workers protest
06/04/2009
The authorities in Hebei province in northern China have fired the state-appointed boss of a local textile factory after more than 1,000 workers there took part in a protest march over privatisation, job cuts and other grievances.
Official news sources said the decision to remove Wang Lijuan from the position at the Yimian Group was announced at a workers’ rally on April 4.
Founded in 1994, the Yimian Group was once among the top 50 textile companies in China. The state-owned company was sold to Hong Kong-based Yafang Group in January 2004, although a high level of management control has so far stayed in the hands of the local authorities.
News sources have said workers were protesting about the lack of promised new investment in the factory, at a proposal to make 400 workers redundant and at the alleged late payment of salaries.
