The Turkish textile industry has reported that in the last eight months more than 160,000 people in the sector have lost their jobs.

The president of the Istanbul Ready-Wear and Apparel Exporters' Association (IHKIB), Hikmet Tanriverdi, said on announcing the figure that the government should do more to help the industry.

He commented:
"Companies currently are operating with the minimum number of people. If competition conditions are secured and we realise that we have overcome some problems in terms of prices, employment is likely to return to its previous level rapidly."
