The Indiain subsidiary of sports brand adidas has said it plans to have 200 more retail outlets across country by the end of 2009, taking into account the closure of some stores in locations where demand-growth has failed to compenstate for property price increases.

Andreas Gellner, managing director of the subsidiary, has told local media that he was confident that the plan would become reality. He said the new stores would be present in a mix of higher tier as well as lower tier cities in different Indian states. “Our growth is happening through more intensive penetration of metropolitan areas like Delhi, but it is also coming from smaller environments like tier-three and tier-four cities,” he said.

In India, tier-three includes cities such as Ahmedabad, which has a population of more than 5 million people.

At the moment, adidas at present has over 450 stores, out of which around 130 outlets are in smaller towns.
