Amann sheds more Irish jobs
27/04/2009
Specialist thread manufacturer Amann has announced that it will close its factory in Tralee in south-west Ireland, resulting in the loss of 210 jobs. Local political figures siad the decision would also harm other businesses in the area.
The company said the shutdown would be phased, with the spinning operation ceasing production by mid-July this year. The twisting operation will transfer to China over the following 12 months.
The company said the need to remain competitive in a difficult, cost-sensitive market, combined with high labour and energy costs in Ireland hadled to its decision. The company announced 120 job-losses in Ireland in January.
The German has been in Tralee since 1998 when it took over the former Klopman textile factory. The Tralee plant produces specialist threads for sporting goods among other products.
