MerinoFresh named in Smart 100 index

01/05/2009

Australian Wool Innovation’s (AWI’s) MerinoFresh technology has been named one of Australia’s top 100 innovations in the inaugural Smart 100 index. MerinoFresh ranked 27th in the top 100 list, beating more than 830 other nominations.

According to AWI, this is an impressive outcome for a fibre technology innovation as the top-ten list was dominated by medical and lifesaving products including a breast cancer detection test, a portable retinal camera to screen for eye disease and a glow-in-the-dark evacuation system.

MerinoFresh was the only textile innovation to rank in the top 30. It allows woven products made from Merino wool to be refreshed or cleaned after wear using a domestic shower. Garments are placed on a hanger and spray rinsed in the shower for three to four minutes using clean, warm water at about 40°C. The garments can then be drip-dried which, depending on the fabric weight, normally takes approximately three to four hours at room temperature. If the garments are hung carefully on the hanger, no ironing is required after cleaning.
