Moroccan textile sector struggles

According to the Moroccan Textile and Clothing Industry Association, AMITH, the global economic downturn has had a severe impact on the country’s textile industry.

The association claims exports have fallen 12.9% and that 13,000 jobs have been lost. Around 10,000 of these losses were directly linked to the economic slowdown.

AMITH has appealed for government help in order to prevent further job cuts and to boost exports. It says it wants more companies to have access to state funding.

The government says it will do what it can to help the sector and that it will make take the downturn as an opportunity to focus on training, which, it claims, has been lacking in recent years.

Response from industry representatives has been largely positive; however, there are fears that the situation will get worse before it gets better.
