Calhoun Sportswear: made in Canada
According to Calhoun Sportswear, it has never been a better time to produce goods locally rather than shifting production overseas. It claims the company is one of the few Canadian firms that has shown a commitment to producing goods on home soil.
Founder and CEO, Marty Myers, points out that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find products that are designed and manufactured in Canada. However, the state of the economy should encourage companies to produce goods domestically. "I want to keep jobs in Canada because our economy needs them," he says.
The company still manufactures more than 40% of its products at its St Catharines, Ontario, factory. These products include National Hockey League apparel, such as swimming trunks, shorts, bikinis, and tube tops, as well as other branded apparel. The company employs more than 100 Canadians at peak times. Garments are designed, cut, printed and sewn at the 35,000 sq ft factory.
Mr Myers says he would like to bring more production back onshore, and claims it has been receiving numerous inquiries about ‘made in Canada’ products. He believes there has been a real shift in the way consumers value where products are produced.
