Sugoi president reaches hall of fame

Stan Mavis, president of Vancouver-based sports clothing brand Sugoi, has been added to the Colorado Running Hall of Fame.

Mr Mavis, the former American record-holder in the half-marathon, joins a class that includes Olympians Alan Culpepper and Benji Durden, in addition to well-known local runners Rich Castro, Kim Jones, Creigh Kelley, Maureen Roben and Jerry Quiller. The official induction ceremony took place on May 13 at the Denver Athletic Club.

Mr Mavis, who became Sugoi president in 2006, was nominated both for his running success and long career in the running industry. After a collegiate career at Michigan State, he began working in the Boulder running retail store of Frank Shorter and in 1980 set the American record in the half-marathon (1:02:16) as part of the Nike-sponsored Athletics West Track Club.

From 1983 to 1987, he served as an apparel and design consultant to various running brands, including Hind, Asics and Fila, before joining Hind as director of merchandising and product development. In 1988, he launched Pearl Izumi in the US and in 2002 he was named senior vice president at Brooks Sports, where he was responsible for directing the company’s apparel and footwear.

“I am honoured and a little shocked to be named to the Colorado Running Hall of Fame,” says Mavis. “I spent many years in Colorado, but the names on this list are truly distinguished and I’m happy to be in their company.”
