According to Italy-based engineering consultant D'Appolonia, the technical textile sector is beginning to increase its market share in the overall textile market.

The company was commissioned by Confindustria Bergamo and the Chamber of Commerce to look into the way the textile industry was developing, and how it was responding to the global economic downturn. Its findings were presented on May 19 in Bergamo.

The study found that turnover for the technical textiles sector accounted for just 15% of the total textile industry’s turnover in 2005, while it now accounts for more than 30%.

Sports and protective textiles were among the segments discussed, and were identified as areas where fairly rapid growth was likely to occur.
